Carnival of Villers-la-Ville

european institute of cultural routes

Michel Thomas-Penette

18 February 2010

The idea of organising a stroll around the village’s roads on Shrove Tuesday was launched in 1973, following an idea by a shopkeeper.

Lucien Binamé was immediately assisted by Edourad Vanderlin, Joseph Delvaux, Josianne and Edgard Denis, whose vehicles were the support for the PA system. Parents dressed up their children and helped to organise the first procession.

1992: Twentieth anniversary. Two weeks of festivities were planned, with an exhibition looking at previous carnivals, an audiovisual montage, a dance, the plantation of a commemorative tree, a busy procession with many exterior groups representing the Europe of twelve. This twentieth edition finished with a final rondeau which reunited revellers in the public square before the closing ball.

2006: Villers-la-Ville renewed the tradition of the first carnivals. The C.C.A.P. brought back the children’s procession. This allowed children, wearing their best outfits, to parade in the village’s streets. Last year, the carnival committee launched a world tour for its procession. After Brazil, China. But the highlight was without doubt the superb rondeau by “Les Bossus du Ramipont” followed by a firework display to celebrate their twentieth anniversary.

2010: 5 and 6 March.
